9 fascinating lessons for teaching about Judaism in the Primary classroom!
The R.E. product consists of nine detailed interactive whiteboard topics full of information with bright, colourful photos/images to bring the pupils’ understanding of Judaism to life. Each topic is accompanied by extensive Teacher’s Notes to support the teacher when teaching Judaism in the classroom. Many opportunities are given for the pupils to compare and contrast the Jewish religion with other religions that they may know. Assessment is included.
Being Jewish The topic covers what Jews believe, Abraham, Moses, being kosher, the Jewish symbols – the Star of David and the menorah, the Mezuzah, Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah and a Jewish wedding.
Hanukkah The topic explores the meaning of Hanukkah – the Festival of Lights. It details the story of Hanukkah and the characters involved. The topic also explains the significance of and the difference between a menorah and a hanukiah. How Hanukkah is celebrated is included.
Purim The topic tells the story of Esther and the reason for the spring festival of Purim. The celebration of Purim including ‘the four mitzvot’, the food that is eaten during Purim and the traditions behind Purim are all covered.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur The topic introduces and develops an understanding of the New Year festival of Rosh Hashanah. It explains how and why Rosh Hashanah is celebrated and the pupils are given opportunities to compare and contrast this with other religions. Special Rosh Hashanah foods that are eaten and the reasons for these foods are explained. The service in the Synagogue, the use of the shofar and the holiest day of the year – Yom Kippur – are also included in this topic.
Sukkot The topic introduces and develops an understanding of the autumn festival of Sukkot – the Feast of Tabernacles. It establishes the traditions behind the celebration of Sukkot, the Four Symbols, the Lulav, Hoshana Rabbah and the special food that is eaten called ‘kreplach’. The ninth day of Sukkot, Simchat Torah, is explained.
Understanding Pesach The topic introduces and develops an understanding of the story of Pesach (Passover). The full story of Moses and the plagues, the Passover, the Exodus from Egypt and the escape of the Hebrews are all explained.
Celebrating Pesach The topic explores the meaning of Pesach (Passover), a revision of the plagues, how Pesach is celebrated and the use of the Seder Plate with the special foods eaten during Pesach.
Shavuot The topic explores the two meanings of Shavuot – the celebration of God giving the Torah to the Jewish people and the harvest. The topic includes detailed information about what happened on Mount Sinai when God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses and the Jewish people. The Ten Commandments are included. How Shavuot is celebrated and the special foods eaten during Shavuot are explained.
The Synagogue The topic looks at the synagogue and the Jewish Holy books including the Torah scrolls. The role of the Rabbi, the clothes the Rabbi wears and the way that Jews pray are all included. The pupils have the opportunity to discuss, compare and contrast the synagogue with other religious buildings that they may know.
