Free Primary French Language Game

You and Me

You will need:

  • children
  • music

The Game

The aim of the game is to encourage the children to speak a foreign language in a fun situation. The children use vocabulary at their level making the game suitable for all ages.

  • Divide the class into two concentric circles.
  • Start the music.
  • One circle of children walks clockwise and the other anticlockwise.
  • Stop the music.
  • The children in one circle face the children in the other circle. Each pair begins a dialogue in French.
  • When the music starts again the children say 'au revoir' and continue walking around until the music stops again.
  • The children begin a new conversation with someone else until the music starts again.

Language Learned

The language used by the children is at the teacher’s discretion. It could include but is not limited to:

  • Hello - Bonjour ou Salut
  • How are you? - Ça va? (to a friend) ou Comment allez-vous? (to someone older)
  • Fine and you?  –
    • Ça va et toi?
    • Ça va bien et toi?
    • Ça va mal et toi?
    • Bof!
    • Pas mal!
    • Bien merci et vous?
  • What is your name? -  Comment tu t’appelles?
  • My name is – Je m’appelle …
  • Where do you live? – Où habites-tu?
    • I live in -  J’habite à Glasgow en Ecosse.
  • What age are you? - Quel âge as-tu?
  • I am – J’ai dix ans.
  • Goodbye – Au revoir ou À tout à l’heure! ou À bientôt!

The teacher may decide to stop the music for very short periods introducing an element of fun where the children only manage to say ‘Bonjour’ and ‘Au revoir’.

The game can be played in the classroom or in the gym.
